Frequently Asked Questions

Common

  • Q: Will you keep pace with ECMA 376 development

A: No. Not automatically. If you need current versions and you want to be sure working with the official standard please make use of ECMA 376 documents and see our License. If there is a new edition available and you want to use our Webhelp format, please get in touch

  • Q: Why did you start this project?

A: Within our projects we are working with OOXML heavily, and it is very annoying to work with these big PDF and Word documents

A: We want to show how cool and easily Microsoft Word to DITA and to responsive web help can be with our Cloud Service c-rex.net.

  • Q: You are using oXygen Webhelp System is it possible to use other output systems

A: Yes of course. DITA is used as an intermediate format. So you can make use of any other output systems like Adobe FrameMaker.

A: DITA is one format we can create. Concept of https://dts.c-rex.net is to publish from any format to any format. So it is no problem to create your custom XML flavor or the interface format of your output system directly. Get in touch

Conversion Results

  • Q: We found some issues in output. How do you handle this?

A: Please Get in touch and send an email. We will but this in our bug-base and handle this within the next webhelp build.

A: Conversion is based on rules. Please note, this is a show case and not all eventualities are covered yet. We are working on this in future. As content is not created with XML but with Microsoft Word authors are not always rules aware and have to work very consequently. This different content handling has to be covered by such rules as far as it is possible.

  • Q: Is this generated automatically?

A: Yes Word conversion is done fully automated. We only integrate 5 Parts to our master DITA Map manually and write the introduction by hand. So automation process is interrupted due to this issue. In a productive environment, where this is not necessary, process can be done fully automated within the c-rex.net cloud environment.

A: OOXML Overview Document is available PDF only. We extracted data from the PDF file and generated the topic hierarchy, list levels, codeblocks and phrases in an automated way. So basic DITA-Map hierarchy is available and a good starting point for some small fixes by hand.

  • Q: Why don't you use <example> elements for examples defined in original source?

A: <example> is only allow in topic <body>. You can't have examples in tables or within paragraphs. One solution is to specialize DITA to support <example> at this positions, but as one target of this project is be compatible with DITA 1.3 default Topic implementation, we decided to use <note> element with attributes @type other and @othertype example.

  • Q: Why do you support nested tables?

A: This is due to structure in Word documents. There is no chance to flatten these nested table structure in a useful way. We know, for fully responsive layout, tables and even nested tables are not optimal.

  • Q: Do you support DrawingML

A: Not yet. Most DrawingML features are currently not supported. Currently (2017-04-02) we are working on a DrawingML to SVG conversion scenario. Keep in touch.

  • Q: Do you support WordMath to MathML

A: Not yet. Within our projects there weren't any requirements to this yet. Let us know if you have this requirements, and we will increase priority for this requirement
